Moses, His Mother, and His Sister

Holding family service is important as it is a time where the family gets together and gives a meaningful identity as a Christian family. Being a Christian family does not mean we are Christians only in names, but we have to actually live a family life as Christians. Through giving the service together as family, the identity as the most basic unit of church is set and the history of faith will be passed down throughout the generation. The passage is a story about the birth of Moses and the helps from the family through which he was able to survive. Miriam, for instance, contributed significantly to her family. Daughters, in many ways, have tendency of having motherhood over her younger siblings. Moses had this older sister who was able to take care of him. Prior to this passage, we know that the Hebrews came to Egypt in the time of Joseph. They became so numerous in number that Egyptians got afraid of them, to the point that they started to kill all the boys. But because Hebrew midwives feared God more than the Pharaoh, they didn’t listen to the Pharaoh. The Pharaoh, then, ordered his people to search for the boys and be killed. When you apply this to the situation of Christians, there is Satan who is like the Pharaoh. Satan exists in this world and he wants to kill the believers’ faith. We should be aware of the enemy who plots to take away the believer. One time there was a documentary on hippo. A baby hippo is on the water and a crocodile is at a distance, watching carefully at the baby hippo. When the baby hippo gets far enough from the mother, the crocodile comes immediately and snatches the baby hippo. Why does Satan kill? It is because Satan is afraid. The believers have the authority to run over Satan. So we should be close to God who is the protector and we should also be aware of the commission given to us and the work of God done through us. Moses could not be hidden anymore after 3 months. Instead of throwing the baby into the Nile River, but the mother prepared a basket for him. The basket was made out of papyrus, and one of the uses of papyrus was for writing. When you put papyrus, tar, and pitch together to make a basket, baby Moses survived. What protects us from the world? It is the Word of God. Mother needs to diligently protect the children by weaving the basket with the Word of God. We have to seal them with the Word of God. During the service, children observe the holiness through the atmosphere of the parents. Not only that, the praise go deep inside and this holiness are embodied in the children. Even though they may not understand your word, they will be influenced by the atmosphere. But the holiness and tradition will affect them deeply. Many people today lack this protecting layer of word. Many do not have this tradition or foundation of the Word. They live recklessly, following whatever they think is the best. How could we install the faith in the children? When the time came, the mother let Moses go. It was possible because she prepared the basket. We cannot be their patron forever, but we can teach the Word they would keep them. There were a lot of people involved in saving Moses, especially the mother who prepared the basket. After then, the sister of Moses, Miriam, was there. Because she cared for her family and watched over her brother and gave suggestion to the daughter of Pharaoh, Moses was able to survive. But finally it was God who led the basket to the princess, and it was God made the princess to have pity, and it was God who protected Moses.
